ARTIST STATEMENT

It is the process of making art that is important to me. I have a vision, a beginning point, but as a piece progresses that vision is usually altered. As I work, materials are added and subtracted, decisions are made and changed and it is the unexpected that is inspiring.

I use collage as a way to build structure and create abstract forms. Whether it is welding together shapes of steel or assembling fragments of handmade paper, these parts and pieces are intertwined to create an image.

As work changes so do the influences that inspire those ideas. But some impressions remain as a foundation. Images and readings relating to African and Native American cultures endure. Initial ideas about ceremonial rituals, and the shield used as both a religious icon and protection resurface time and again in subtle ways. Other influences relate to the infrastructure of boats. The curved rib supports and repetition of form seem to have an impression upon my work. Spherical shapes also have a strong presence and are a recurring theme.

It is important for me to experiment, challenge myself and have my work continually grow and change.
